The coronavirus pandemic had resulted, in the majority of international competitions as well as in the majority of national championships, in the increase in the number of possible changes for the coaches during the match. CAN2022 will follow suit.

Football is an eminently conservative environment and few would venture to swear otherwise. In recent years, the arrival in particular of the VAR (in reality of the VAR, masculine term) has thus unleashed passions, for the most part negative.

The Covid-19, in turn, has had a major impact on world football (early end of the championship here and there, closed-door matches, specific health protocols). Beyond the slump, however, a measure seemed to convince the followers of the round ball: the passage of three substitutions during the game to five, while keeping the number of replacement sessions to three (understand by this that it is not possible to bring in five players in three times maximum, for example by entering three of them, then a fourth and finally a fifth). This measure could even extend beyond the pandemic since it is considered beneficial by many, in an era where meetings are ever more numerous and calendars increasingly busy.

For CAN2022 (in reality 2021 postponed to 2022), the African Football Confederation had made a first gesture by allowing the coaches to retain 28 players against 23 as usual. It therefore makes a second by finally authorizing five replacements for the coaches of African nations.
