The legendary Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Association, today, Monday, January 10th, apologized to the Algerian journalists who were attacked in the Cameroonian city of Douala.

A group of Algerian journalists was subjected to an armed attack on the evening of Sunday, January 9, in the city of Douala, while they were in Cameroon to cover Africa Cup of Nations 2021, which started on January 9 and will continue until February 6 next month

“I offer my Algerian journalists friends my sincerest apologies after the attack they were subjected to Saturday in Douala,” Eto’o said when receiving the president of the Algerian Football Association, Charf Eddine Amara.

Ito added: “We ask for forgiveness from our brothers and assure them that what happened does not reflect Cameroonian hospitality. It is an accident for which we apologize and reiterate to our guests that they are in their country. We asked the Minister and the Cameroonian authorities to continue working to secure our guests and brothers.”

CAF calls for an investigation into the attack on Algerian journalists

The African Union issued an official statement condemning the incident of the attack on Algerian journalists, and called on the Cameroonian authorities to work to control security and provide appropriate conditions for CAF guests, including the teams, fans and media professionals.

In its statement, the African Union said: “During the night of January 9, around 10 pm, journalists of Algerian nationality were physically assaulted with knives in one of the streets of Douala by an unknown group.”

The statement added: “The Confederation of African Football (CAF) strongly condemns this outrageous act and expresses its solidarity and best wishes for a speedy recovery for the victims, and calls on the local authorities to do everything in their power to address this matter.”

And the CAF statement continued: “CAF demands, immediately, an investigation into the incident and calls on the Cameroonians to refrain from any provocative and violent action so as not to spoil the great football festival hosted by their country.”
